The early growth of present-day Westmont had much to do with improved canal transportation, mainly that of the Illinois-Michigan Canal. Although the state of Illinois authorized the building of the canal in the 1820's, construction did not begin until the 1830's. The economic panic of 1837 brought the rapidly progressing construction to a standstill, which resulted in many of the workers taking up farming in the area around Westmont. The settlers cleared the land and agriculture became the major occupation. Because of their proximity to Chicago, the farmers had a ready market for their agricultural products.
In present times, Westmont is popular because the village and its citizens actively work with the local business community to ensure its success, while energetically promoting the village's economic advantages to businesses desiring to establish a new base of operations or relocate an existing enterprise. Because of this collaborative environment Westmont is appropriately named "The Progressive Village."
Community involvement is important in Westmont. In August the Westmont Summerfest features live music, kid's rides, a softball tourney, a petting zoo, great food, and special events over a long weekend. On Wednesdays in June and July, the Westmont Park District holds Concerts in the Park, showcasing a variety of talents who perform in the Ty Warner Park gazebo. On Thursday evenings in the summer, stores stay open late and collections of classic automobiles pull up to curbs along Cass Avenue from Des Moines to Naperville Road, with special exhibits of squad cars, military vehicles, and fire trucks also on tap. These Main Street Cruisin' Nights invite visitors to stroll downtown, browse and shop, have a bite to eat, or just take in the interesting lineup of vehicles.

Salt Creek Ballet performs and conducts presentations throughout the year, but its holiday season production of "The Nutcracker" is the highlight of the performance schedule. Their spectacular and not-to-be-missed rendition of the Tchaikovsky classic features more than 100 performers, including dancers, chorus, orchestra, and renowned guest artists.
